Baroque soprano after Stanesby	392, 415 or 440 Hz

There are a lot of surviving baroque soprano recorders, especially from the Low Countries. Though they are wonderful characterful instruments, they are not very suitable for the solistic use we have for them today.



The round full open sound I’m after seems to be more characteristic of English instruments. So I make a soprano in C based on the Stanesby sixth flute from the Brüggen collection, scaled as a whole (including bore) to 440 and 415 Hz. The proportions are very balanced, more ‘alto’ like. The bore is relatively wider at the bottom than the Dutch instruments. This gives a very solid low register and flexible sound with a large dynamic range. A real concerto instrument, but also very suitable for chamber music because of its warm round sound.

The wide English bore also makes a nice soprano in C at 392 Hz. The bore is a combination of this Stanesby soprano and the Bressan Fourth Flute.
